I read a blog post of a blogger who went from 0 Google page rank to 4, from no subscriber to over a 100 and no commentator’s to having a small community on his blog in 3 weeks.

That was a big achievement for a new blog, a feat that would take many other bloggers up to a year to achieve. He revealed some of the secrets tactics that gave him this wonderful result.

The funny thing is-it wasn’t a secret.

It was something most of us have heard of and have not been seriously doing. (Myself included)
One of his secret tactics was blog commenting.

In my mind, I believe he wasn’t just writing “great post, keep it up” in the comment box of the blogs he visited. He was doing what I would call effective blog commenting. A term I define as the act of writing comments that add value to a blog post. The question is what sort of comments adds value to a blog post? Well, that I will discuss in another post.
So in summary, blog commenting is great, it works.

Here Are 6 Reasons Why

1. It Gets You Out There
Blog commenting gets you out there. It gets people to see what you are made up of. It exposes you.
If you go to a blog, one of the ways of showing you were there is to drop a comment. If you don’t do that, the owner of the blog won’t know you were there, other readers won’t know too.
Dropping a great comment is like making a speech in an event with many other people in attendance. When they go to other events and keep bumping into you giving great speeches. It means you must be something. There is only one where to find out what this something is –that is how and why they visit your blog.

2. It Builds Back Links
Commenting builds back links to your blog. That is as straight forward as you can get.

3. Build Reciprocity
Reciprocity is the act of giving or doing what you want others to give to you, to do to you or for you, but you are doing it first.
Commenting on other Blogs will get other bloggers to feel indebted to you. They may pay back in many ways, like also commenting on your blog.or at least visit your blog.

4. Build Relationship
When you comment on other blogs, you start a relationship with the owner of the blog and other commenters on the blog. I have visited blogs where people discuss like they know each other so well. Of course they do. They met each other on that blog. By just commenting, they formed a community.

5. Build Authority
You can also build authority by commenting on other blogs. Now I am not saying you should make your own blog post on the comment box.
Just adding a new point, making an observation or a friendly disagreement can show you have something .That can slowly build your authority.

6. Opens You To Bigger Things
Commenting can easily pave a way for guest posting, blog collaborations and other collective activities.

What other ways can or has commenting helped you. Please share in the comment box.

I agree. But, this works both ways. It drives me nuts when bloggers insist that I register for their newsletter or other whatever before I can join the conversation. Some bloggers using free blogging platforms only allow for comments from other users of that free service. While blog comment spam is always a concern, restricting who can comment is so very short-sighted long-term.

      hi Michele,
I agree with you…spam is always a problem..even akismet fails sometimes..and restricting who comments is limiting because you may be restricting someone who has a great thing to add to the conversation.

    Hi,

I like the fact that you said commenting opens you up to bigger things. It sure does.

Commenting also make you think deeply before you type anything as your comments create a perception of who you are in other readers’ minds and you only have one chance to make a good impression.

Thanks for stopping by at my blog

My blog honestly didn’t even exist until the day I made my first comment, I don’t enjoy commenting as much now as I use to simply because it’s become time consuming, but I still try to comment back on everyone’s blog that comments on mine.

  6. Ryan Cowles says:

I definitely agree on these points. I can say, without a doubt, when I really started to get out there and post comments and try to spark conversation, my own traffic increased. The two are directly related.

And as you say, the comments have to have something to them, not just “Nice Work”. There’s nothing worse than an article that has 20 comments that are all two word responses, haha.

    • Mk Akan says:

Hi Ryan….totally agree with you.when you add a good comment(comment with meat) to a blog post…you add value…which is good for the commenter and the blogger.
